As usual, it will be held in the Buttermarket.

Also as usual, Tools For Self Reliance will be there, as well as Jump4Timbuktu and the Hay, Brecon and Talgarth Sanctuary for Refugees. They will be joined by Fair and Fabulous, who sell ethically sourced gifts, homeware and accessories, toys and plastic-busting products.

This will also be an opportunity to buy Fairtrade olive oil, dates, almonds and more from Zaytoun. All their products are grown by Palestinian farmers, so that will be a good time to show practical support for the Palestinian people.

Eigonhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11368838188678418192noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1296627661824454835.post-39884615041724652582023-03-02T10:39:00.000+00:002023-03-02T10:39:01.682+00:00Fairtrade Fortnight Coffee Morning
It's Fairtrade Fortnight, and I passed by the Fairtrade stall on the Thursday Market this morning.

They will be holding a coffee morning at Eighteen Rabbit, the Fairtrade shop in the middle of Hay, on Thursday 9th March, from 10am to 1pm, with a special guest all the way from Uganda.

Jenipher has been organising Ugandan coffee farmers (many of them women), and they now market their own brand of Fairtrade coffee, which is available at Eighteen Rabbit. The message is that there is still time to mitigate the most extreme effects of climate change, but only if pledges are turned into action. Big changes to the global economy are needed. On the personal level, people can buy Fairtrade products, but action also has to be taken by governments and multinational companies. The Fairtrade Foundation is already planning what they want to do for COP27, which will be held in Cairo.

Farmers in poorer countries are already feeling the effects of climate change. In Honduras, Guatamala and Nicaragua farmers have seen their crops of coffee, cocoa, honey and bananas devastated by extreme weather events.
Eigonhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11368838188678418192noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1296627661824454835.post-2538672804667145562021-11-30T19:05:00.005+00:002021-11-30T19:05:48.613+00:00Fairtrade Christmas Fayre
This was held on the Sunday of Hay Winter Festival in the Buttermarket, and a lot of regular supporters were there - like Love Zimbabwe, Zaytoun, Tools for Self Reliance, Hay2Timbuktu and Jump4Timbuktu.

At 2pm, a minute's silence was held for the 27 people who drowned in the Channel as they attempted to reach the UK.
Eigonhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11368838188678418192noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1296627661824454835.post-31066618834413213942021-08-09T19:01:00.001+01:002021-08-09T19:01:08.122+01:00Summer Fairtrade Fair
The weather was not summery. In fact, it rained rather a lot. I was so cold I went over to the Hay, Brecon and Talgarth Refugees stall which was selling jumble as well as tea, coffee and cakes, and bought a jumper that I put on straight away! Their lemon drizzle cake and coffee was also very good. Their stall made £491.45, which they are going to use for phone top-ups, hardship needs and their welcome day in mid-August.

At the other end of the Buttermarket were Tools For Self Reliance, who seemed to be doing a good trade in refurbished tools, and tools made by blacksmiths in Tanzania. Then there was Fair and Fabulous, selling bags and toys and re-usable containers. Zaytoun were selling olive oil and other produce from Palestine, and Jump4Timbuktu had silver and leather goods from Tuareg craftsmen in Timbuktu, including a leather chest that looked as if it should be full of treasure!

Then there were local crafts - some beautiful grey pottery, baby clothes from Utopia Designs, and me as the representative of the local Stitch and Bitch group, selling embroideries and paper art.

I was very grateful to the young couple on the Utopia Designs stall, who let me use the chair they'd brought with them - I can't stand all day like I used to be able to!

Eigonhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11368838188678418192noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1296627661824454835.post-55113354027076588582021-02-17T11:40:00.005+00:002021-02-17T11:40:47.303+00:00Virtual Fairtrade Fortnight
It's been a strange year since I last posted, and of course no real life events could be arranged for Fairtrade Fortnight this year.

However, Fairtrade Fortnight is still going ahead virtually from February 22nd to March 7th. The theme this year is Climate Justice.

Fairtrade Wales are holding a Climate Change Coffee Morning on Saturday February 27th from 11am to noon via Zoom, to talk about climate change and to hear from Jennipher, a coffee farmer in Uganda. Her coffee is grown on the slopes of Mt Elgon in Uganda and roasted in Wales, and is both organic and Fairtrade. Tickets are free, and there is also an opportunity to buy some of Jennipher's coffee before the event.

On Thursday March 4th, from 7pm to 8.30pm, there will be a panel discussion organised by Swansea Fair Trade Forum on Climate Justice for a Fairer World.

Tickets and more information are available from the Fairtrade Wales website.

Eigonhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11368838188678418192noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1296627661824454835.post-78757123021804691362020-03-03T19:45:00.000+00:002020-03-03T19:45:08.209+00:00Latest News from Fairtrade HayThe Fairtrade Foundation have renewed Hay's status as a Fairtrade Town. Quite a bit of work has to go into providing the evidence for this, so the Fairtrade Hay group are rightly delighted.
The Fairtrade Foundation commented: "Your group has demonstrated dedication to ensure Fairtrade becomes part of daily life in Hay-on-Wye. You have managed to engage successfully with a great number of people and with a variety of local organisations."
We're coming to the end of Fairtrade Fortnight now, and the Fairtrade Hay group are speaking twice to the pupils of Hay School, and showing a short film about cocoa farming in West Africa, as well as a display in the school lobby. The theme this year is the campaign to secure a fair wage for farmers, especially women farmers.
Hay Deli is promoting the Fairtrade Palestinian company Zaytoun in its shop window, with a Saturday tasting session. Zaytoun's range includes olive oil, herb mixes, grains, almonds and dates.
The Fairtrade Hay group are also going to do a survey shortly of shops and businesses in Hay to assess how much Fairtrade produce is offered, and to see where they can encourage an increase. I was involved in the very first such survey - it'll be interesting to compare the two.
Fairtrade Hay meets on the first Monday of every month at 6.30pm in the Blue Boar - new members always welcome!Eigonhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11368838188678418192noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1296627661824454835.post-22789576345425707732019-11-30T18:39:00.001+00:002019-11-30T18:39:22.104+00:00Fairtrade Christmas Fair at the Hay Winter FestivalWhile the Food Fair was taking place in the marquee in the town square, and Hay Winter Festival was happening in the marquee at the Cattle Market, the Butter Market was full of Fairtrade stalls for the annual Christmas Fair.
Love Zimbabwe had the stall across the far end, and one lady had come back after about six years away - and said it felt as if she'd never been away. Tools for Self Reliance had a good selection of garden tools on display, and popular items on one of the other stalls seemed to be beeswax wraps - cloth wraps for presents, which are re-usable and an alternative to wrapping paper, and cloth bags for presents, sewn in India. There was also a range of Zaytoun produce including olive oil, and embroidered purses.

There was also a Fairtrade stand in the marquee on Friday evening, for the turning on of the Christmas Lights. The new banner was on display, proclaiming that this is a Fairtrade Town.Eigonhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11368838188678418192noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1296627661824454835.post-71854473038073785512019-08-31T15:44:00.000+01:002019-08-31T15:44:01.072+01:00The Fairtrade LogoThe next meeting of the Fairtrade group in Hay is on Wednesday 4th September at 6pm in the Blue Boar.

The Fairtrade logo was first introduced 25 years ago, in October, and to celebrate local communities are being encouraged to hold a 25th birthday party to celebrate Fairtrade's achievements and reinforce the principles the logo represents - fair wages and working conditions for farmers and growers in developing countries.

One of the things that the Fairtrade movement is concerned about at the moment is the undermining of the Fairtrade logo by global companies who have introduced their own labels, which are not independently audited.
Sainsbury's now has a 'fairly traded' mark. Lidl is introducing non-Fairtrade bananas alongside the Fairtrade bananas it sells. Nestle, Cadbury, Starbucks and McDonalds have all introduced their own in-house programmes.

So remember the original, and best, logo to be sure you're supporting Fairtrade:
This year it is from February 25th to March 10th.
In Hay, there will be a stall on the Thursday market on Thursday 28th February, with information about local activities and the global efforts to guarantee a living wage for farmers - this year the focus of the campaign is West Africa, including Cote d'Ivoire and Ghana. Between them, these two countries produce 60% of the world's cocoa beans, so a simple way to help them would be to buy more Fairtrade chocolate! Hot chocolate and homemade cupcakes will also be available at the stall.
Hay Co-op uses Fairtrade chocolate in all its own brands, and Fairtrade chocolate is also available at the Hay Deli and other local food shops.
Many women work on cocoa farms, and at present they have fewer rights than men, so the Fairtrade Foundation is working with governments and retailers to improve conditions for women in particular, with the slogan "She Deserves a Living Income".Eigonhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11368838188678418192noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1296627661824454835.post-26791165887687417762018-11-24T13:00:00.001+00:002018-11-24T13:00:57.791+00:00Fairtrade Christmas FairThe Fair is still in full swing in the Buttermarket - I went along this morning just in time to hear the Kinnersley Singers performing:

(They're also looking for new members).

Also there were stalwarts of the Fairtrade Fair Tools for Self Reliance, Jump4Timbuktu selling silver and leather goods (also available at Haymakers throughout the year), Hay2Timbuktu with their toilet (the latest campaign was to raise money for new girls' toilets at the high schools in Timbuktu), and the Hay, Brecon and Talgarth Sanctuary for Refugees, who were providing mince pies and hot drinks, and selling copies of Eugene Fisk's books Only Connect and O Happy Hay! Only Connect is a book of portraits by Eugene of some of the refugees that the Hay, Brecon and Talgarth Sanctuary for Refugees help by organising days out in the countryside.

Also at the Buttermarket is a chap who's come all the way from Stroud, and says that coming to Hay is one of the highlights of his year! He was selling all sorts of gifts - mugs from Swaziland, silk scarves from India, elephant poo paper, and lots more. The shop is called eachday Trading Co., and they have a website at www.danaqa.com They work with women-led businesses in a variety of developing countries, and the name means "pleasantly surprised" in Amharic.
As part of the festivities, Fairtrade Hay will be having their Christmas Fair in the Buttermarket on Saturday 24th November. Hot drinks and cakes will be provided this year by Hay, Brecon and Talgarth Sanctuary for Refugees.
Jump4Timbuktu will be displaying jewellery and leatherwork, and there will be crafts from the Wati Collective from Columbia, food from Palestine's Zaytoun, and textiles and children's gifts from Dragon's Garden.
This year the Fairtrade Hay group are also seeking to renew Hay's status as a Fairtrade Town, which depends on the number of outlets in the town that sell Fairtrade goods and food. As part of this effort, they are trying to persuade more local shops to stock Fairtrade products.Eigonhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11368838188678418192noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1296627661824454835.post-51864440659597183222018-05-25T10:24:00.001+01:002018-05-25T10:24:11.402+01:00Ready For the Festival

There are two videos on the Fairtrade Hay Facebook page, one showing the official opening of the Fair by George the Town Crier, and a brief speech by the Mayor, and the other saying farewell to Jo Eliot, who has been a powerhouse of enthusiasm on the committee of Fairtrade Hay for several years. She's moving on to pastures new, and will be missed in Hay.
However, new and enthusiastic members have joined the committee, so the work will continue to encourage Hay to embrace Fairtrade products.Eigonhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11368838188678418192noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1296627661824454835.post-77485576846452110582017-11-24T12:17:00.001+00:002017-11-24T12:17:37.745+00:00Christmas FairThis year's Fairtrade Christmas Fair will be held on Saturday 16th December, in the Buttermarket, from 10am to 4pm.
As usual, there will be fairly traded and local gifts, jewellery, textiles, tools and crafts.
There will also be Christmas songs from the Georgian choir at 11am, and from Hay Primary School Choir at 2pm.
The Fair will be officially opened by Hay's Town Crier.Eigonhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11368838188678418192noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1296627661824454835.post-78187523877490026842017-10-28T13:17:00.000+01:002017-10-28T13:17:30.991+01:00Hay2Timbuktu Celebrates 10 Years of TwinningTen years ago, Hay was selected (the other finalists were York and Glastonbury) to become the UK twin of Timbuktu. The Mayor of Timbuktu and other dignitaries visited Hay, and several people from Hay went to Timbuktu.
The twinning is mainly focussed on health (with the Medics4Timbuktu) and education, particularly girls' education, but it's noteworthy for the Hay Fairtrade blog because one of the new trustees of Hay2Timbuktu is Louise Davies of Eighteen Rabbit, who also does a lot of work on the Fairtrade committee.
The report on the Hay2Timbuktu AGM can be found at the Life in Hay blog - and Fairtrade wine from the Co-op was served during the evening!Eigonhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11368838188678418192noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1296627661824454835.post-86615571839143071022017-08-19T11:53:00.000+01:002017-08-19T11:53:29.429+01:00Community FairFairtrade Hay is one of seven local groups squeezed into the Buttermarket today. In fact, they're a sort of 3-in-1 group, with silver jewellery from Timbuktu on one end, manned by Chris Armstrong, Fairtrade information in the middle, looked after by Jo Eliot, and Palestinian goods on the far end from Zaytoun.
I stocked up on their excellent olive oil. The lady there also had quite a bit of traditional Palestinian cross stitch work on display, made into pouches, cushion covers and so on. They seem quite expensive at first glance, until you appreciate how much work and time has gone into making them - and they last for years! I have a very hard wearing purse I bought from the same lady some years ago at one of the Clifford Craft Fairs. They also have olive oil soap.Eigonhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11368838188678418192noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1296627661824454835.post-29277132794388986822017-08-08T19:37:00.000+01:002017-08-08T19:37:01.664+01:00Buttermarket - Fairtrade FairThe date of the next Fairtrade Fair is Saturday, 19th August, at the Buttermarket. Zaytoun will be there, and there will be jewellery and plants for sale. Fairtrade Hay will have an information stall, and Fairtrade members will be there to discuss the issues of Fairtrade and Brexit (yes, Brexit will have an impact on Fairtrade issues), and the recent decision by Sainsbury's to set up their own fairly traded label in competition with the Fairtrade logo. Or, of course, any other subjects members of the public want to talk about.

Meanwhile, Jo Eliot is planning to move to Portugal in the near future, which will leave the Fairtrade committee without a Chair and a Treasurer. So new members are being keenly sought! Jo has done huge amounts for the Fairtrade group, and will be sorely missed!Eigonhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11368838188678418192noreply@blogger.com0
