Christmas Fair and Winter Festival

This year the Winter Hay Festival will be taking place over the weekend of 23rd to 25th November.
As part of the festivities, Fairtrade Hay will be having their Christmas Fair in the Buttermarket on Saturday 24th November. Hot drinks and cakes will be provided this year by Hay, Brecon and Talgarth Sanctuary for Refugees.
Jump4Timbuktu will be displaying jewellery and leatherwork, and there will be crafts from the Wati Collective from Columbia, food from Palestine's Zaytoun, and textiles and children's gifts from Dragon's Garden.

This year the Fairtrade Hay group are also seeking to renew Hay's status as a Fairtrade Town, which depends on the number of outlets in the town that sell Fairtrade goods and food. As part of this effort, they are trying to persuade more local shops to stock Fairtrade products.

Hay's Fairtrade Status Has Been Renewed!

Good news just in time for the Christmas Fair! Hay has now been a Fairtrade town since 2007 - and this will be the eighth Christmas Fair.
Everyone has worked hard to achieve this, especially Louise from Eighteen Rabbit.
There's more to do, of course - it's surprisingly difficult to find Fairtrade coffee served at any of the cafes in Hay at the moment (and Hay has quite a lot of cafes).

Planning for the Christmas Fair

....is well under way!

Fiona Howard, the current Mayor, will officially open the Fair, and George the Town Cryer will be in attendance.
The Hay, Brecon and Talgarth refugee group will be doing the refreshments this year.
Chris Armstrong will have some Christmas trees available again.
And of course there will be the usual mix of interesting stalls selling Fairtrade products.

The last meeting of the committee also discussed the fact that it is no longer possible to get a cup of Fairtrade coffee in Hay, despite the large number of cafes. Out of 14 cafes only one met the requirements to be listed as Fairtrade, by providing four different Fairtrade products. However, there are ten possible bed and breakfast establishments that can be listed.

In October, it's time to renew the Fairtrade Town accreditation, which went very smoothly two years ago, and hopefully will go smoothly again. Hay has now been a Fairtrade Town for eight years.

The next Fairtrade meeting will be at 6pm on Sunday 16th October at Tomatitos.

We Have Fairtrade Status!

Yay for us!
We just got the news that Fairtrade status has been approved for Hay until 2011.
Here's what the Fairtrade Foundation had to say at the end of the report:

"Final comment:
Congratulations on maintaining Fairtrade Town Status for Hay on Wye and for the outstanding work you have achieved over the past year. It has been a pleasure to hear about all the fantastic events that have been organised and to see support develop and spread. We would like to thank everyone that has been involved in ensuring that the campaign continues to go from strength to strength. It is because of campaigns such as this that Fairtrade continues to grow, bringing more benefits to more communities in developing countries and encouraging businesses big and small to put people back at the heart of the transaction.

Your next renewal will be due in two years (November 2011) and please ensure that your update includes everything that has occurred since July 2009 when this application was submitted. Our apologies for the time it has taken to process this application and for the panel to do justice to all the hard work that has obviously been dedicated to taking Fairtrade forward in Hay on Wye

We look forward to hearing more when the next renewal is submitted and please do not hesitate to contact us in the meantime should you require any additional support, ideas or assistance. Good luck with all your future plans! "

We're all very happy!
